Man sentenced in $7M scam targeting local Orthodox Jewish community A 58-year-old Sherman Oaks man was sentenced to nearly seven and a half years in federal prison Monday for scamming fellow members of a San Fernando Orthodox Jewish Israeli community out more than $7 million through investment company he ran with his brother out of their parents’ home, authorities announced.  Sassi Mizrahi was found guilty on five counts of wire fraud and, along with the 87 months of prison time, was ordered to pay some $4.47 million in restitution.  His brother, 51-year-old Encino resident Motty Mizrahi, pleaded guilty in January of this year to six counts of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft.  From June 2012 to March 2019, the Mizrahi brothers fraudulently raised millions of dollars from at least 40 investors in their community, promising them “guaranteed” returns of 2% and 3% a month and annual rates between 30% and 102%, according to a news release from the United States Department of Justice, Central District of California. &n...

This large California city is poised to ban single-use plastics Irvine could become the latest California city to ban single-use plastics, including water bottles, bags, straws and even mylar balloons.The Irvine City Council is set to hold public comment and vote on the proposed ordinance Tuesday night.The ban, which would take effect next year, is similar to those already enacted by dozens of California cities and counties and follows a state law requiring non-compostable, single-use items be reduced substantially over the coming years.Irvine’s ordinance would “expressly ban the use of expanded polystyrene and plastic containers” used in food service and retail. 15-year-old Pittsburg boy killed in San Joaquin County (FOX40.COM) — The Lodi Police Department said it is investigating a shooting that resulted in a minor being killed on Saturday night. The victim was identified as Alan Ruiz, 15, of Pittsburg, according to the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner's Office. Police said that around 11:15 p.m., officers responded to reports of a shooting at the 600 block of Hale Road. When officers arrived on the scene, they located Ruiz with life-threatening gunshot wounds. Teenager struck, killed by train in Riverbank The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased, police said.
